You have searched what tattoo removal costs and come back with a range so wide it told you nothing. Older devices commonly need six to twelve sessions to clear a tattoo. At the going rate of £45 to £175 a session, that puts a full course anywhere between roughly £270 and more than £2,000. The spread has little to do with greed. It reflects how much ink is actually cleared each time you sit down.
Comparing two clinics on a single session price leaves out the part that decides your bill. Ask instead how many sessions a design like yours usually takes and how far apart those sessions sit. Those two numbers, multiplied out, are the honest cost of clearing a tattoo.
There is a second cost that never appears on a price list, and that is time. Sessions sit six to eight weeks apart, so every extra one adds two months to the plan. A course that runs to twelve sessions is most of two years of appointments. A course that runs to five or six is under a year.

Course pricing is only worth having if the arithmetic holds up, so here it is in the open. A small tattoo treated four times at the single-session price of £130 comes to £520, while the course of four is £440. The course saves you £80 for exactly the same four sessions.
The pattern holds across the bands. Four micro sessions at £90 would be £360, against £305 for the course, and four medium sessions at £195 would be £780, against £665. Large work is £1,120 paid singly and £950 as a course. Extra large is £1,560 against £1,325.
Four sessions is the start of most plans rather than the whole of one. Tattoos usually take four to eight sessions, so a course of four buys you the first half of the work at a better rate. What the sessions beyond that cost is a question to ask at your consultation, where your own design is measured and the plan is written down.
This is where the cheap session reveals itself. A laser that clears a little ink at a time asks you back more often, and each of those visits carries its own price. A picosecond pulse breaks ink into finer fragments, which your body clears more readily between appointments. Fewer sessions at a higher price can cost less than many sessions at a lower one.

Most tattoos take four to eight sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart. Ink density, layering, depth, colour and the age of the piece all move that number, and so does how quickly your body clears the fragments. Black and dark blue are the most predictable colours. Red, orange and yellow answer to other wavelengths and clear more slowly.
Partial fading for a cover-up needs fewer sessions than full clearance. Your tattooist only needs the old design light enough to work over, so say that at the consultation and the plan changes to suit. It is one of the simplest ways to bring the total down honestly. You will also be told what your skin needs between visits. Daily sun protection over the treated area matters, because protected skin clears ink more comfortably and keeps the whole plan on schedule. The first visit is a consultation, and it is the appointment that sets the price you will actually pay. Your tattoo is measured, photographed in consistent light and read colour by colour, so the band it falls into is a fact rather than an estimate.
