How Long Does Lip Filler Last, and Do You Really Need a Top-Up?

Why lip filler fades gradually, what Cannelle and manufacturers estimate, and how to decide whether a top-up is worth having at all.

How Long Does Lip Filler Last, and Do You Really Need a Top-Up?

Somewhere around month eight, you notice it in a photograph. Your lips still look lovely, but a little softer at the edges than they did in the summer. Is it fading? Should you book? At Cannelle Skin Clinic in Summertown, Oxford, the clinic’s estimate for lip filler is six to twelve months, and the gentle truth is that you never strictly need a top-up. You get to decide whether you want one. That freedom is one of the nicest things about hyaluronic acid filler. It is a temporary treatment by design, so the choice comes back to you every time.

Why lip filler softens over time

Hyaluronic acid filler softens gradually, so the choice to top up stays yours.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your skin makes every day. Filler gels are a stabilised version, built to last longer than your body’s own supply, but they are still broken down gradually. Allergan Aesthetics’ UK Juvéderm Q&A describes exactly this as the reason its fillers are not permanent. Lips are also the busiest feature on your face. They talk, eat, sip, kiss and smile all day long. That constant movement is one reason lip results sit at the shorter end of filler estimates. Allergan’s UK information gives up to 12 months for its lip products, and up to 24 months for some products used in the mid-face.

Nobody can promise you a date, but a few things play a part.

  • The gel. Softer and firmer gels behave differently, and each manufacturer gives its own estimates.
  • Where and how much. Placement and amount both matter, although more product is never a reason in itself.
  • You. Cannelle’s lip page mentions metabolism and lifestyle, and these vary from person to person.

The simplest way to know more is to ask. Dr Mattia Parducci performs every injectable treatment at Cannelle, and he can tell you which gel he proposes and what its manufacturer says about lips.

How fading actually looks

As filler fades, lips return gently towards their own shape.

Gradually, and kindly. Most people describe a slow return towards their natural shape: a softer border, a little less fullness, a photograph from a few months back that looks slightly plumper than the mirror today. There is rarely a single day when it “goes”. A small habit helps here. Take a photo in the same light at your two-week review. Months later, it gives you a fair comparison, which is much more reliable than memory.

Do you need a top-up?

No. When the filler has gone, your lips are simply your lips again. Plenty of people have filler once, enjoy it and move on. Others love the result and like to keep it. Both are happy outcomes. If you are tempted by a top-up, begin with a fresh look rather than repeating last time’s order. Some filler may still be there, even if you cannot see it clearly, and adding more without accounting for it is how lips drift away from the look you wanted. A review of lip filler complications lists filler moving beyond where it was placed among the problems reported, which is exactly why each visit deserves careful assessment.

One question is worth carrying into any repeat visit: “What would you change, and what would you leave alone?” Sometimes the best answer is “nothing yet”. At Cannelle, lip filler is priced by the amount used: £270 for 0.5ml and £345 for 1ml. A top-up is priced the same way, on the amount agreed after assessment, and Dr Mattia confirms the price before he begins. The NHS suggests thinking about future maintenance costs before you start. For lips, that is a simple question. Would you enjoy a treatment once or twice a year? Or would you rather see it as a one-off and let it fade?

When the filler has gone, your lips are simply your lips again.

When to call sooner

Fading is quiet and should never hurt. Contact the clinic if your lips become swollen, lumpy or tender weeks or months after treatment. Delayed swelling and lumps are recognised effects of hyaluronic acid filler and appear in Allergan’s UK safety information, so they are worth having checked rather than waiting out. If you have had filler elsewhere, bring what you know to your consultation: the clinic, the date and the product name if you have it. That history helps Dr Mattia plan around anything still there.

Whether you are planning a first treatment, weighing up a top-up or happily letting things fade, contact Cannelle Skin Clinic or call 01865 537 885 to see Dr Mattia in Summertown. The thin lips page covers the lip concerns the clinic sees, and the dermal fillers page covers other areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions this article tends to raise. Anything else is welcome at your consultation.

Does lip filler last longer the second time?

There is no reliable rule. Some people feel a repeat treatment lasts longer, but that can simply be filler still present from before. Each treatment should be planned from how your lips look on the day.

Will my lips look worse than before once it wears off?

As the filler breaks down, your lips gradually return towards how they were. If they look noticeably different from before you started, or feel lumpy, ask for an assessment rather than assuming that is normal.

How often can I have a top-up?

There is no set interval. Cannelle’s lip page says some people top up once or twice a year to keep a result. That is a choice, not a schedule, and a fresh assessment always comes first.

Can I speed up the fading if I change my mind?

Hyaluronic acid filler can often be broken down with an enzyme injection. The enzyme is a prescription-only medicine, so whether it suits you is a medical decision made after assessment. It is not right for everyone and is not an instant fix.

Does exercise make lip filler fade faster?

The evidence is not strong enough for a reliable answer. The clinic’s estimate already allows for differences between people, and judging your own result is more useful than changing your routine.
